Battlefield 4 confirmed by EA.President Frank Gibeau announced that plans for a fourth installment were in place during a keynote speech at the University of California.
A spokesman later told IGN: "Frank was speaking broadly about the Battlefield brand - a brand that EA is deeply passionate about and a fan community that EA is committed to."
Battlefield 3 shipped 10 million copies on its launch day, making it EA's best selling opening-day release of all time, and is currently available on PC, PS3 and XBox 360.
Activision's rival game, Modern Warfare 3, has also seen record sales in the two days it has been on sale.
